Google Maps There is a Hendrix Ranch Map on Google Maps. The most southern placemark marks the front gate. Two ways to ranch: There are two ways to get to the ranch from Austin: the "you can't miss it" way, and the short, scenic route. Both routes take about 45 minutes from 360 at Bee Cave Road. You can't miss it: Take Hwy 290 west from Austin. Drive through Dripping Springs. Watch for a small rust-colored highway sign pointing to Pedernales Falls State Park, and follow the sign onto RR 3232. When 3232 ends, turn left and drive 4/10 mile to the ranch entrance. While driving the 4/10 mile, you will see a sign that says "Johnson City 8 Miles". Just after that are entrances to three ranches, all grouped together on the right. The ranch just before ours has a black ironwork entrance with a bright orange logo. A road marked Polly Miller is for the ranch just after ours, and they have white limestone pillars and a mailbox at their entrance. Our entrance is the one in the middle with the red, crushed granite road, and simple gate. It is somewhat hard to spot, so drive slowly. Continue with the instructions below called "After you reach the gate". Shorter, scenic route: For the more adventurous, we recommend the scenic route. This route has two low-water crossings and should be avoided if you have a small car and it has been raining in the last few days. Drive with care on the narrow, windy roads. From Austin take Bee Cave Road west. Turn right onto 71. In 1.8 miles, at the second light, turn left onto Hamilton Pool Rd (3238). In 6.7 miles, turn left onto Hwy 12. In 2.9 miles, turn right onto Fitzhugh. (Watch for the road to curve right with a white fence at the left. There is also a sign for County Road 101. The actual road is marked "Fitzhugh".) In 7.2 miles, at the second stop sign, turn right, and continue for another 6.8 miles to our ranch entrance. This keeps you on the main road, CR 101, which becomes CR 201 when you cross the line into Blanco County, and then it turns into RR 2766. Drive with special care until after you have crossed the low water crossing, as the road is sometimes too narrow for cars to pass. While staying on the same road, watch for a sign on the right marking the entrance to Pedernales Falls State Park, then for RR 3232 entering from the left, and then for a sign that says "Johnson City 8 Miles". Continue with the instructions below called "After you reach the gate". After you reach the gate If you are not on crushed red granite, you are at the wrong gate. Set the combination, then press down on the lock. Be sure to spin the combination, then close and lock the gate as there are cattle on the property. Watch out for cattle on the roads. As you drive the first two miles of the ranch, watch for exotic animals behind the high fence on the right. After about three miles you will come to a fenced field, and then to a gate. The gate does not have a lock. Be sure to close and fasten this gate after you go through. (If either gate is already open, please close and fasten it.) In a few yards, there is a fork in the road. The left fork takes you to the west side of the ranch, and the upstream part of the Pedernales. The right fork takes you to the screened gazebo. There is a lady's outhouse near the gazebo. (700 acres of bushes are provided for men). ranch.hendrixweb.com phendrix at fas.harvard.edu |
